'People thought that after lockdown there would be a boom in people suffering from cabin fever but, instead, it has almost been the opposite situation as people have got in the habit of staying in. That is the picture for the whole pub and restaurant industry. Its chairman Tim Martin said: 'The aftermath of the pandemic and lockdown restrictions have been far more difficult than anyone thought. Wetherspoons also noted that costs were far higher than three years ago, especially for labour, food, energy and maintenance. ![]() Like-for-like sales rose 18 per cent in the last quarter of 2022 at the firm's 844 pubs, but are still 2 per cent behind 2019 levels. In January, after announcing the closure of ten pubs, the chain explained that sales jumped at the end of 2022 but it is still struggling to keep up with its pre-pandemic performance. The new changes by Wetherspoons now means the cost of a pint of Carlsberg has risen from £2.39 to £2.57, a pint of Stella has gone from £3.35 to £3.60 and a Leffe has spiked from £3.85 to £4.14.Īt the start of the year Wetherspoons warned that prices could climb to battle the soaring food and energy costs. This comes weeks after it confirmed that ten of their pubs will be closing for good after being sold and another 35 branches are still up for sale. The popular low-cost pub chain also increased the cost of meal deals by up to 75p amid the cost-of-living crisis. Bristol's The Jolly Sailor sells the combination for the UK average of £8.55Įarlier this month, the low cost pub chain hiked their food and drink prices by 7.5% in a move which will see the price of a pint increase by up to 29p. ![]()
